Know your boxing workouts

If you train just to enjoy the many fitness benefits of boxing and you don’t intend to take this to the ring, you might not need everything a professional boxer uses. How much space is enough?
You may want lots of boxing tools yet if you don’t have the necessary space, you can forget about some of them. Therefore, consider the space you have at disposal and see what you can make of it. What you need to keep in mind is that your boxing gym should be divided into two areas.
One will be used to store and hang the bags and thus allow for bag training whereas the other should be an open area where you can jump rope, shadowbox, and do various cardio exercises. Typically, the area dedicated to such exercises in a boxing gym covers somewhere about 258-400 square feet.
A smaller space will indeed resemble the boxing ring yet it will limit your movements. Your training space should allow you to work various angles and directions. As for the gear part, you might want to set an area where you can hang both your double end bag and heavy bag. This way you won’t have to interchange them when you want to train.
Heavy boxing bags
You can’t have a boxing gym without boxing bags. Choosing the right one for your needs might be a bit difficult, considering the many models and different types and sizes available for sale. Think of what you liked best when you trained in a professional gym.
Depending on your budget, you can go for a leather or a heavy-duty vinyl bag. While leather bags are more durable and are preferred by most boxers, heavy-duty vinyl shells are also a great addition to a home gym. They are more affordable and they provide durability as well.
As far as the bag’s weight is regarded, you must pay utmost attention to what you choose since a too light bag can swing a lot and prevent you from punching it successfully and a too heavy bag will not bounce enough for you to practice properly. It is recommended to go for a bag that weighs about half of your weight.
Think of the length of the bag as well. Most boxing bags are long enough to allow for high kicks. Low kicks require a Muay Thai bag, though. Also, you will have to choose between a freestanding or a hanging bag. Both of them come with advantages and disadvantages. The one you feel most comfortable with is a winner. Plus, a bag that is already filled is often desired.
Speed and double-end bags
Developing speed and improving your hand-eye coordination should be the benefits your boxing training gets you. Such benefits can be achieved with a speed bag. Training with a speed bag will also help you develop shoulder strength and keep your hands up during your workout.
If you want to further improve your technique, sharpen your reflexes, enhance your hand speed, and even practice head moves, a double-end bag is ideal. It needs to be fixed to the ceiling and the floor, though. The speed and double-end bags are optional but if your space and budget are not limited and you want to train like a pro, they make a nice addition to your home gym.
Jump ropes and other tools

In case you’re interested in workout diversity and you’re not on a budget, you might want to add slam balls to your gear and, why not, even a tire for tire flips if you transform your garage into a boxing gym. Dumbbells are also a great tool if you want to train harder and do burpees with dumbbells.
You can’t box without the right equipment. At least, not if you want your training to be safe and injury-free. Handwraps and gloves are mandatory since hitting the heavy bag without them can lead to wrist and hand injuries that will prevent you from fighting and training.
In case you have enough space to practice sparring with another fighter, you should also consider the use of quality headgear. You have to train like you’re in the ring and this calls for the appropriate equipment.
Don’t forget about using the right shoes, too. You have to train your legs a lot and using the shoes you will wear when fighting is thus necessary to get your feet used to a certain level of comfort.
